The fireworks have ended. The smoke has cleared. It's a new day and, as the world works, the end of the 4th of July marks the beginning of a new season: Back to School. Now if you're one of the many heading to college this year, Back to School no longer means rulers and elemers glue, you have a bigger school supplies list now; one that centers around the 10 X 10 box you'll be sharing with (likely) a complete stranger. That's right, it's time to plan your dorm room set-up.
Now, most thing aesthetics first when planning their dorm decor, and as a design nut myself, I get it. But the truth is, aesthetics only get you so far, comfort is what will keep you happy throughout the full year, so as an expert (AKA I went to college and lived this experience before), I've compiled a dorm room essentials list that focuses on the items that will help you truly relax in your space (bonus! many of them are super cute too):
Let's Start with THE MOST IMPORTANT: Bedding
First, let me hold your virtual hand when I say this, your mattress will be uncomfortable. The good news? You can fix that. Try something like this extra plus (washable!) mattress cover:
Next, you absolutely NEED natural fabric, cooling sheets. A full set (yes, including a top sheet). I like these:
Lastly, the comforter is where it's at. The plushier, the better. Oh, and make sure you get something that matches your style. I like this striped set to add a little color:
Okay, Now Let's Talk Extras! The Detail that Matters Most
Take from someone who knows....dorm rooms stink. You can clean until the cows come home, but 50 years of 19 year olds with questionable hygiene cannot be removed by all purpose spray. Not to worry, you can fix it.
Step one: Candle Warmers! You probably can't have open flames in your dorm, so a cutie candle warmer like this one will help you keep things smelly peachy:
But in truly drastic situations, I cannot recommend an air purifier enough. Back in my dorm days, the mold and mildew had be in a constant cycle of sick, tired, and coughing. Then I got an air purifier and I was magically cured....Here's one that won't break the bank:
Okay, last tip. You need seating and storage....but space is at a premium. Porque no los dos? Combined both needs into one solution with a storage bench like this one:
